In 1930 Nutfield Priory became a hotel with golf course owned by Mr Oliver Picton Davis. After a spell as a school, it became a hotel once more in 1988, when it had a sympathetic renovation by Handpicked Hotels that restored its stone carvings, wood panelling, marble fireplaces and organ. De Vere Latimer Estate Chesham, Buckinghamshire, HP5 1UG. Although the roots of this imposing mansion house date back to 1838, it was during World War II that De Vere Latimer Estate became one of Britain’s most secret homes. Following a multi-million-pound refurbishment, it now offers 31 deluxe rooms, restaurant, bar, pool and sauna. SG12 7PZ Set in stunning grounds, this 18th century Queen Anne style manor was once the home of Sir Henry Page-Croft, Winston Churchill’s Under-Secretary of State for War. Anyone arriving in Britain will scan their road atlas in vain for the Home Counties. What we mostly mean by “Home Counties” is those shires that surround London - and the attitudes of people who live there. The term may derive from the nineteenth-century Home Circuit of Assizes, which sent judges out from London to deal with local misdemeanours in neighbouring counties. Or it might come from the way that nineteenth-century railway developments made it possible for wealthy men working in London to commute back to a home in the leafy counties surrounding what was then the world’s biggest metropolis. Today the term conjures up images of big mock-Tudor houses built down the pretty country lanes that connect prosperous towns and villages.

The Old Stables B&B Winslow, Buckinghamshire, MK18 3AJ. Set within a walled garden, the Old Stables B&B was built around 1740 and features original oak beams in all four guest rooms. Some rooms have en suite facilities whilst others have private bathrooms, a continental breakfast is served each morning. Near Great Missenden, this cabin was inspired by the wrought-iron tabernacle chapels of the 1920s but has been placed in the middle of a forest that has resident badgers. An hour's drive from London, a five-minute walk from a mainline station, walks into the Chilterns are easy and there are shops and a pub within easy reach too.
Margaret’s collection of porcelain, silver and Dutch paintings is displayed in the house’s immaculate reception rooms and galleries. Invisible behind its tall hedges in three acres of grounds, Langshott Manor is a haven from the under-inspiring housing estates that encircle Gatwick airport. It’s less than three miles from that busy hub and so makes for a wonderful alternative to the usual kind of UK airport hotel if you’re flying out the next day. There are only 22 bedrooms so it is possible to book the whole hotel and Langshott is licenced for ceremonies in the garden. There is even a hotel wedding tradition of ringing the old bell mounted on the roof above reception whenever a couple get married. The hotel stands in 26 acres of grounds and there is an impressive trail through its redwoods, if you fancy an early morning jog or an after-dinner stroll.

Set in private well-tended gardens, this imposing Georgian villa is just a short walk from West Drayton railway station with its direct link to central London via the Elizabeth Line. A couple of miles away from Bognor Regis surrounded by more pedestrian post-war bungalows, is this beach-front house. Designed by owner and architect James Wells it is the winner of a sustainability award. The house sleeps up to six people in open-plan, floor-to-ceiling, uncluttered glory.
The Pilot Inn The Pilot Inn, Greenwich, Greater London, SE10 0BE. Virtually on the steps of the O2 Arena, the 200 year old Pilot Inn blends contemporary comfort with rich history. Built in the early 1800s to serve the local coal workers, it now offers 10 beautiful, boutique bedrooms and a traditional pub restaurant. Another remarkable Home Counties home, this time not a hotel, is Standen House which lies 14 miles south of Nutfield Priory. It was built over three years from 1891 to 1894 to designs by architect Philip Webb, in the Arts & Crafts style, as popularised by William Morris. Webb actually designed Morris' home, the Red House in Bexleyheath for him. When work on Standen House was completed, his clients the Beale family presented him with a silver snuff box, engraved with ‘When clients talk irritating nonsense, I take a pinch of snuff’, a witty testament to their working relationship.

The colour of the walls are dark and moody and beds come with artfully placed faux fur throws but it’s a more thoughtful project than you might expect for the band that also brought ‘Skag and Bone Man’ into the world. Hackney came to Hertfordshire this autumn when this formerly conventional convention hotel was converted into a leafy millennial hangout near Cheshunt, complete with pottery and macrame sessions, yoga and glassblowing. The room rates are deeply reasonable, the service unstuffy but efficient and the food extremely good. The kitchen, which has two restaurants and a cafe, is headed up by Robin Gill of Clapham’s acclaimed Dairy restaurant. There are some beautiful places to stay in commuter-land, from a 1920s country manor hotel, to a former coastguard lookout.
Family-run for two generations, an off-grid farm on the Isle of Sheppey that’s part of a wider nature reserve. The main farmhouse initially presents a solid 18th-century face but extends into a glass and steel expanse; there are six bedrooms in the main house and Elmley Cottage, also part of the reserve, sleeps 10 in a blend of yoga mat and roll-top baths. The farm also has a collection of cabins including Salt Box which offers superb views of the Dickensian marshes through floor-to-ceiling windows. What sets Elmley apart from the average farm stay though is its barn bar and restaurant; serving up avocado-based breakfasts, Kent-centric evening meals and lunches. In the nineteenth century the seaside resort we now known as Eastbourne was part of the Compton Estate, owned by the wealthy dukes of Devonshire whose seat is still at Chatsworth.
