The truth is that two lesbians and one teenager who were beloved in their communities were murdered last week, and that we are thankful that their murderer was apprehended and imprisoned and will be punished. We owe this family honor and respect and grief, rather than using their deaths to further push our own community apart, and will not tolerate comments that pursue that kind of divisive agenda. Years earlier, Rivers was a teacher at a high school in Antelope, Calif., where she made headlines by coming out as trans to her students. The school district fired her, and she sued and ultimately received a settlement of $150,000. She eventually moved from Antelope, which is near Sacramento, to the Bay Area and became an activist for trans rights. Rivers was covered in blood and in possession of three weapons when police arrived and quickly arrested her, the Mercury News reports.

She retired from BUSD in 2015, and began working as a part-time computer prep teacher at Esperanza Elementary School in Oakland. The defense argued it was preposterous to suggest Rivers killed three people on her own, at age 61, and argued a fifth person must have been inside the home that night. Prosecutors argued Rivers spent weeks gaining Reed’s trust, arranged to spend the night, waited for the victims to fall asleep, then used a gun equipped with a silencer to shoot Reed and Wright in their beds. Dana Rivers, 67, of San Jose, murdered Charlotte Reed, 56, her wife Patricia Wright, 57, and Wright’s 19-year-old son, Benny Toto Diambu-Wright, on Oct. 11, 2016, the jury found.
